Overview

Schooling in Monaco is obligatory for children from 6 to 16 years of age. Children can attend nursery school from the age of 3. The school year in Monaco runs 3 terms annually and the school starts in early September and finishes end of June. Lessons are taught in French. Some schools offer French language adaptation courses for foreign students who do not speak French.

All State schools and private schools “under contract” are approved as French educational establishments abroad. The timetables, teaching programmes and examinations taken are in conformity with those set out by the French national educational authority. The only school offering bilingual teaching (English and French) for children from 3 to 10 and from 11 to 15 years is a private school.

The state schools include six primary schools, one college and one Lycee. The private schools “under contract” include a primary school, a college and a Lycee.

The school ages run from 6-10 years old (Primary), 11-15 years old (College), 16-18 years old (Lycee).

State schools are free throughout the schooling years. The private schools “under contract” charge a fee by term from Euros 275-493 depending on the school type and age of the child.

The application process depends on the type of schooling required. For state schools and private schools “under contract” the parent(s) need to show they reside or work in Monaco. Places are subject to availability.
